The Christmas Holiday

This Christmas while a great deal more casual than normal, brought about a very welcomed (well to me) 12 to 14 inches of snow flurries nicely stacked in front of mailboxes (preventing an easy convenient mail grab. It requires at least one shoe to get lost), clinging to idle cars, making the animals happy to see white then very discouraged to recognize it resembles a mountain of cold they must climb. Oh and there’s the overly confident trucks who believe they are immortal when it comes to the snow god. These trucks intimidate sedans into driving faster. Oh and the big plows with the signs “stay back stay alive”.

Christmas cheer seemed rather muted, mild, tamer this year around. The stories were empty, some looking deserted, with little evidence of profits-just a few shoppers strolling through, empty carts rolling, and inventory levels reduced to one to two items per shelf (I imagine a result of failing to replenish for fear of not being able to sell what they have). I think the lagging economy, the empty penny jars, the absence of hope (or seeming thereof), the unemployed still unemployed, and perhaps materialism reduced to less significance contributed to this muted, lesser enthusiastic Holiday state of mind.

While the snow continued it’s storm, packing in the cars, leaving some home alone for Christmas, others dug their way out.

My events:

  • Waiting for my mail and Zune to be returned by Microsoft (it crashed) I backed my sports car out of the garage to start it (been a little while). The two hour challenge became trying to get it BACK in the garage
  • Christmas Eve dinner (turkey this year) and the giving of gifts (wii games, winter coats, clothes, beauty products and jewelry were opened by all)
  • Guitar Hero, Mario Cart played by all, watching 500 days of summer (great flick-should be nominated for best screenplay but won’t win the big award), Sandra Bullock’s new flick All About Steve (stupid but mildly entertaining)
  • Then hitting the Minnesota snow-filled roads to find my way back home
  • Christmas day composed of Christmas Eve dinner, pies, and cookies
  • Playing the card game 500 for the first time for several hours
  • Watching Walter Matthau in Cactus Flower (surprisingly enjoyable)
  • Then hitting the Minnesota snow-filled roads again. This time more challenging with that icy substances glued to the windshield wipers meaning you use them you’re have those water spots to see through
